The Italian Hero is a Thing of Beauty

We called them heroes growing up, not a grinder, not a hoagie, but a hero. And I LOVE them. I prefer getting them at the deli or bodega because they just manage to make them perfectly and in such a way is much easier and tastier then when I create them at home.

However, I was craving mortadella and I wasn’t sure if my local bodegas had mortadella, so I just decided to make my own version of an Italian sub.

Salami of some sort

Ham of some sort (deli ham, prosciutto, etc)



Shredded lettuce

Thinly sliced tomato

Seeded Italian bread


Red wine vinegar

Italian seasoning

Salt pepper


Now What?

Mix together equal amount of oil and red wine vinegar in a small bowl. Sprinkle with Italian seasoning, salt and pepper and put to the side.

Slice the bread in half, or slice till you reach one end, but not all of the way through for a less messy eating experience.

Using a spoon, sprinkle the vinegar mixture thoroughly on the inside of the bread, both sides, please.

Layer on equal layers of each meat and cheese. Top with tomato and shredded lettuce.

So good.
