In the mood for some seafood? Then you might want to give Flex Mussels a try. There are two locations, one in the West Village and one in the Upper East Side. We chose the UES location for convenience and showed up with hungry bellies. True to its name, Flex Mussels offers a variety of mussels and I must say that dessert was fantastic! Their Executive Pastry Chef is Zac Young, who was also a contestant on Top Chef: Just Desserts, really knows his stuff.

For apps we chose:

Chowder: Definitely would not order again. Why do restaurants want to make my chowders not creamy and fattening? That takes all the fun and taste out of it.

Smoked Salmon with crème fraiche: A standard dish that isn’t special, but is always very tasty. One note, the bread that it came with was completely burnt. Minus 5 points.

Burnt Fingers: Consisted of fried calamari, shrimp and oysters. Well cooked and fried. I kept reaching over for these wonderful morsels.

Mussels:

Maine-lobster, brandy, tomato, garlic and cream. It wasn’t great, but it was good, I loved finding bits of lobster through to munch on. I will say that I brought my leftovers home and they tasted better the next day because all of the flavors got to marry for longer. I do wish it were a bit creamier, funnier thing is that, that’s what I wished of my chowder too.

Parma-parmigiano cream, meyer lemon, scallions, toasted garlic, shallots. This was fantastic!! The flavors were bold and comforting. It was a pot of goodness.

Dessert:

The original deep fried whoopee pie: dark chocolate cake, cream cheese filling caramelized white chocolate cream. How could you not want to try this? It’s a freaking deep fried whoopee pie. Not only is the idea innovative, but the cake was nice and moist. Get it if only to try a deep fried whoopee pie. One more time now, DEEP FRIED WHOOPIE PIE.

Flex donuts: meyer lemon, cinnamon sugar, praline donuts with a vanilla dipping cream sauce. It’s so hard to say no to fresh donuts, so we didn’t. They were wonderful, I didn’t want to share them. Warm, soft and simple, I was a happy diner.
