Lets Get Fat At Momofuku Milk Bar
David Chang is one of the most famous chefs out there right now and I’ve heard multiple people call him, a “badass,” in a good way of course. Known for his Momofuku empire, currently consisting of Noodle Bar, Ssam bar, Ko, Milk Bar and Ma Peche, Chang also won the James Beard Foundation rising star award in 2007. I’m quite interested in him and wouldn’t mind reading a biography on him if there was one. Without a doubt, he is a talented chef with brilliant ideas, he has this cocky attitude in the press that can be exasperating, but at the same time he makes you laugh and his food is classic, but innovative at the same time. One thing that I will admit is that a lot of the time, I want to try Chang’s food not because I think it is so spectacular because of the tastes, but it is the ideas that I want to see transformed into a finished product. While waiting for a friend in the East Village the other day, I wandered into Milk Bar for some warmth and left with six cookies, two types of cake truffles and a slice of crack pie.
With his desserts, the flavors are incredibly strong and decadent. Make sure to pair it with milk, coffee, tea or some type of liquid because you will need it. One note regarding his cookies, they are nice, soft and chewy, big plus for me.
It has a toasted oat crust with a butter filling that is so rich that you will feel like you are going to have a heart attack. I love butter, so I really enjoyed this pie, but if you cannot handle intense flavors, skip this dessert. The filling is nice and silky. Think of the filling as the one in a pecan pie, but without the pecans. You bite right into it and your teeth will slice right through. Would get again!
How could you not want to try this cookie? It has pretzels, potato chips, coffee, oats, butterscotch and chocolate chips. It is a fun cookie to eat and the flavors are well balanced. The coffee grounds in it are brilliant. I had expected more salt, but you couldn’t really taste it, which was a plus in my eyes. Would get again.
A very decadent cookie, it kind of reminded me of these black out cookies I tried a while ago. Think of it to be like a firm chocolate batter that can be held in your hand, but feels and tastes like batter. I would have enjoyed it more if it had less salt. The salt was way too much for me. I prefer salt in my desserts to balance out sweetness, but don’t want to actually taste that there is a ton of it in there. Wouldn’t get again!
Blueberry and Cream Cookie
It’s a good cookie. The blueberries they use are so flavorful and I really enjoyed the butter and soft chewiness of it. It is a wonderful, simple cookie. Is it anything really special? Not really, but it is an all around really good cookie. Would get again.
Peanut Butter Cookie
This was a damn good cookie. It is a peanut butter cookies that has traces of peanut brittle throughout that kind of reminded me of butterscotch. I really enjoyed this one, it may be my favorite out of all of the cookies. Probably one of the best peanut butter cookies I have ever had. Would get again!
I was expecting this to be like a corn muffin, but I was completely wrong. It was literally like corn soup, in a cookie form. I’m glad I tried it, but I can pass it for my next trip. Wouldn’t get again!
Another fun one, you have cornflakes, marshmallows and chocolate chips. I will say that the texture of the cornflakes was a slight turnoff, and there was so much salt in it. Actually, the amount of salt I tasted in this cookie, was what I had expected from the compost cookie. Wouldn’t get again.
Birthday Cake Truffles and Chocolate Malt Cake Truffles
His cake truffles remind me of munchkins, and were really enjoyable because of their small size. The birthday cake truffle has similar flavors to the birthday cake ice cream at Cold Stone and kind of made me feel like a kid again. The chocolate malt definitely had intense chocolate flavor, I loved that he made them with a malt accent, rather than just having chocolate in there. I will say though, that they didn’t have a cake texture, the inside is more of a raw type batter, so be prepared. I’m on the fence about getting these again. They kind of just want me to go and get Dunkin’Donuts munchkins, so I have to get back to you on this one, but the birthday cake version was my favorite out of the two.
As I’m thinking about all of these again, I’m starting to feel my arteries clog up. Once again, very intense and buttery flavors and rich textures. Not for the faint of heart.
