Apizz (pronounced Ah-beetz) was highly recommended by a friend of mine, and this friend knows what he is talking about. It’s a cozy, rustic Italian restaurant tucked away in the Lower East Side, that you might miss if you weren’t looking for it. While the food was delicious and comforting, the service was very slow, considering it wasn’t a full by any means, so that was quite surprising. Not going to lie, that was a bit frustrating, but I would definitely recommend dealing with it to try the food.
Bread, ricotta and tomato sauce/gravy starter-All I know is, I would love to get my hands on their recipe for the tomato sauce/gravy. They need to bottle it and sell it to go.
Apizz rocket-wild arugula, proscuitto, parmigiano, buffalo mozzarella, plum tomato pizza. Light and crispy, it was a great way to start the meal and was full of flavor. Classic ingredients that always go well together. It was by no means a big pizza, but a good appetizer to share with someone, or if you are looking for a smaller entrée, this would do well as well.
Gnocchi con ragu di carnet-homemade gnocchi, honey-braised prime beef short ribs, tomato ragù. Normally I’m not a fan of sweet touches on my entrée, but this worked. It was a hearty pasta dish, and not only that, but when I think of proper gnocchi, or at least what I consider proper gnocchi to be, this is it. Melt in your mouth goodness.
Fazzoletti e granchio-handkerchief pasta, sautéed jumbo lump crab meat, tomato-cream-basil sauce. This was the lighter of the two entrees, and I loved how simple and straight forward it was. The casual look of the handkerchief pasta made it feel very homey. Seafood lovers will be happy to know that you can actually bite into chunks of crabs and see it in the dish.
Tortoni-amaretto ice cream with a macaroon crunch. Not a fan. I should have left on a high note and skipped dessert. The coconut flakes in the ice cream did more than just give it flavor, it gave it a grainy texture reminiscent of frostbitten ice cream.
