The Perfect Manhattan
Looking for a chill spot in Seattle to grab a drink, where the liquor is good and the bartender will poke fun at you every chance you get? Then check out Quinn’s in Capitol Hill. It’s a gastropub, and while I can’t attest that the food was good, since I didn’t have any, if the service and drinks are any reflection of how their dishes are, I would say that they are excellent then.
It was my first time having a Whistle Pig rye whiskey, and I loved it. Clean and rich tasting, it wasn’t a favorite of the bartender’s, but I will definitely be getting it again. It went down real smooth without any ice, and wasn’t smoky or too sweet, just the way that I like it. Why did I order something that the bartender wasn’t a fan of? I liked the name. Oh! And a little background for those of you who don’t know what a rye whiskey is, to put it simply, it’s a whiskey made of 51% rye. I think Canadian whiskeys get some leeway on this though.
Moving on the Manhattans, the bartender made me a Perfect Manhattan, which I had never had before. I knew what it was, but I had never tried it before and feel like an idiot for not. It was wonderful. When you call something ‘Perfect,’ for the vermouth section, you use equal parts of sweet vermouth and dry vermouth. So this applies to Perfect Manhattans, Perfect Martinis, etc. What I loved about this is that I think he made me a Perfect because I told him that I don’t like overly sweet Manhattans. And it was the perfect cocktail for me. He made it with Overholt rye whiskey and garnished it with lemon rind.
