Getting My Late Dinner Cuban Fix
Work has been crazy lately and my credit card has been feeling the pinch from all of the take out I’ve been getting, but my tummy has been quite happy. Made a call to Amor Cubano the other night and got some really tasty treats.
This was the first time that I have ever had caldosa soup and I need to learn how to make it. The broth was delicious and the soup had beef, chicken, pork, corn on the cob, vegetables, yucca, sweet potatoes and spinach calavaza in it. It was amazing because each bite brought out a new ingredient to eat. You could eat an entire pot of it and never get bored. I wonder if it will take long to make, the broth was really was flavorful so I’m thinking that it’s not a 5 minute thing. I’ll let you know how mine turns out!
With the soup as the starter, I then moved on to their burgers and fries. I have to say that I was slightly disappointed because I was expecting a big burger and actually shoestring fries like the menu states. Instead I got like fried potato sticks and two mini burgers. In the end, I didn’t even bother eating the potatoes, but the burgers were tasty. The meat consisted of pork, beef and Spanish sausages so it was an interesting twist to the normal burger. Another nice surprise, the bun was slightly sweet, which complemented the spiced meat beautifully. Would I get it again? No. Not because it didn’t taste good, but because it didn’t come with real fries and the two mini burgers were the size of two white castle burgers.
And last, but not least, you always have to get a plate of Vaca Frita when going to ordering from Amor Cubano. It is one of the best things on the menu. Vaca Frita is a shredded pan-fried skirt steak flavored with garlic mojo criollo sauce and onions. It is kind of a salty dish, but one that has incredible flavor. It’s that one plate that is always scraped clean when it leaves the table.
If you go to sit down and eat there instead of getting take out, some things to keep in mind. It isn’t an American restaurant, it’s a very laidback Cuban restaurant so expect the service to be slower than you would normally be use to. It’s a cultural thing I would guess. Also, be sure to try one of their seasonal cocktails, they taste quite fresh and lovely.
